It’s my time of the month again ( no not that one)
Here is my 7th EP of the year – With songs about our bad side, and the way people around us perceive us. Uplifting stuff!!
This months songs came very quickly in terms of the actual writing process, All pretty much written in the first week.
Thanks again to those who are listening and letting me know what they think.
Definitely helping me kick on.
new on a full studio album with band will be coming very soon – all new tracks that I haven’t yet released this year
So this month seems to be a loose concept EP ,
Songs about people jumping on the bandwagon and giving uneducated opinions on everything (which we are all guilty of)
musically , I think there is some Bill Withers in there , Al Green maybe – and clearly a nod to Anne Peebles . after a friend told me they saw me playing one of her songs a while back , forgot how much I love her stuff
thanks again for all the listening and feedback – can’t quite believe I’ve made it to 6 months with this project.
and a further thank you to Andy Graham , Author and Bassist extraordinaire. who’s recent book gave me some title and lyrical inspiration ( all lyrics can be seen by clicking on each individual track )
So this months offering is 5 tracks – it contains probably my first “Brewsters Millions” influenced Lyric – so thanks to Richard Pryor for that.
So dark subject matter in there too I guess (for a change) and my usual scathing comments.
so all in all a quite uplifting listen : –
Musically , there is surely some Van Morrison creeping through , and my usual soul leanings.
Hope you enjoy . and please keep sharing and listening – I’ve nearly made it through half a year with this concept , so it helps me to keep going with all the cool feedback I’ve had
Next month , am considering a 10 track Album … but please don’t hold me to that – The football is on , so I might not have time
This months EP was pretty much put together in 10 days , I quite enjoyed the quick turnaround. Hopefully the quality hasn’t suffered
I have been listening to a lot of Smokey Robinson lately and I think some of that has come out in a few of these tracks.
yet again , soundcloud has decided to reduce the volume of 1 track for no apparent reason , and endless remixing and bouncing has not solved this problem – so anothe rone I put down to experience I guess
after all , that is the whole point of doing this project
hope you enjoy and share
and any feedback welcome
as long as it’s positive … obviously
here is my third contribution to my 12 Months of Music Project.
Went back to my roots a little with this one – tried to strip it back and give it more of a live band feel in places (not always successful , too many toys to play with)
All songs were written on Piano , which is something I haven’t done for a long long while.
Subject matter ranges from awareness of growing older, taking a step back and looking at the shitstorm around us, and getting back to what you know best , maybe a mini concept / story flowing through there .. who knows … I only write this stuff, I don’t claim to understand it.
Once again , all lyrics are available on each individual track on Soundcloud and tracks available to download
Thanks again to everyone who has been listening / showing an interest – it really is appreciated. and please feel free to share with anybody who might be interested.
Onwards and upwards , ….
I have no idea what I am going to do with next months tunes ,… we will see
So here it is – my second installment of my 12 Months of Music thingy -a 4 Track EP written and recorded every month
A couple of different sounds in there for me.
And definitely a theme running through the lyrics that I was not intentionally writing.
Been a busy month , maybe that is reflected in the arrangements, dunno. Planning a quiet one in March so maybe it will be more of stripped down sound
What I have learned this month.
Technology is a ball breaker. I really reached my limitations with my equipment this month. Frustratingly so.
All coming to head on upload day (today) where Soundcloud/ Garageband /… or the gods have decided to stream one song quieter than the others…. no matter what I do… ahhh … almost makes the hard work feel a bit worthless.
anyway – get you fingers hovered over the volume knob for the fourth track guys
So it’s done – The first EP in what I’m now calling “The 12 Months of music series” ( or something equally pretentious )
This one is called “Still Heavy” – which after xmas, I guess we all are!
This is by no means a fully mastered industry quality release. I am thinking of this process as more of a musical diary for myself and anyone who cares to listen.
I contemplated going into details of the meaning of each song , but decided against it. But as a summary its a reflection on stuff that happened/ I observed over the past month.
There are some cloaked obscenities and remarks aimed at certain individuals , you’ll find them if you look hard enough. It also included my first lyrics inspired by Greek Mythology (who would have thought it?) after hearing the tale of Icarus on my journey back from Slovakia.
There is also a David Bowie sample hidden in there (see if you can spot it as you’re all such massive fans ) as well as some audio direct from NASA as another little homage to the starman leaving us.
I stuck to the game, each song was written and recorded at home in our little studio flat in Prague during January 2016. It’s a very different way to work , putting a deadline like this on yourself , But I enjoyed the process and learned a lot about recording techniques as I went. Using new software might not have been the most intelligent preparation, but hopefully it will be worth it in the long run.
Ive tried to experiment with a couple of ideas that I haven’t really used in my music in the past, so will be interested to see how it’s received
All tracks are available to download for free if you so wish , all lyrics are included on the sound cloud links too (I know my mother will ask for these anyway)
Feel free to share , and hope to see you back here at the end of February for the next edition
and enjoy …. I hope
